چکیده

In this paper we model the hierarchal nature of memory in order to examine the variance, and in general, all moments of the distribution of time memory access. The existence of an unbounded variance for the memory access time can lead to extremely long wait queues and a particular class of distributions that has this property is the power tailed distribution. We present an analytical model to study the response time. We show that under reasonable assumptions for the values of the parameters involved in the memory levels the response-time for such a hierarchical memory system is power tailed. To validate the power-tail behavior of the memory access time we provide results from our simulations. We also provide a simple relation with the system parameters which helps system architects and designers to avoid power-tailed nature (intuitively, ill-behaved) of the response time.

Low Power March Memory Test Algorithm for Static Random Access Memories (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Memories are most important building blocks in many digital systems. As the Integrated Circuits requirements are growing, the test circuitry must grow as well. There is a need for more efficient test techniques with low power and high speed. Many Memory Built in Self-Test techniques have been proposed to test memories. Compared with combinational and sequential circuits memory testing utilizes ...

Moments of Response Time for Systems With Hierarchical Memories

Storage systems in current day computing machines are in a variety of forms: registers, caches, main memory, disks, tapes, network storage systems, and so on. Each storage system provides the basic functions of storing data and holding the data until it is retrieved at a later time. The main differences between the various storage systems are their speed, cost, size, and volatility. The hierarc...

Performance modeling of hierarchical memories

As the modern computing environment expands memory hierarchy from CPU registers and local memory to network storage, the optimal goal of a computer architect becomes to design a memory hierarchy that maximizes the overall design of his machine with a minimal cost. This requires deciding on the number, speed and size of the hierarchical layers. As the gap between processor and memory speed is gr...

Diseño de Sistemas de Memoria Cache de Alto Rendimiento aplicando Algoritmos de Acceso Seudo-Especulativo

The gap between the cycle time of processor and the access time to memory go on being eminent. The processor performance increases about 60% by year because of reduction of cycle time and the rise in the number of instruction processed by cycle. Nevertheless, DRAM memories access time only reach an improvement about 10% by year although capacity is duplicate every one and a half year, according...
